Curious Architecture Lovers seek Eero Saarinen’s 1962 Utopia
📻 Pack a bag and stay while. Eero Saarinen's 1962 TWA flight center at JFK Airport has just re-opened, and is ready for your company. This architectural icon lived as a closed time capsule since 2001. This month, it has made its comeback as the @TWAHotel, where Space Odyssey dreams can come true #hellodave.
RAISE A GLASS | The Paris Café, led by Jean-Georges, hosts delicious, classic French-American fare, with creative cocktails, all within the stunning aesthetic of the 1960s.
ICONIC ROOTS | On this field trip, we sought Saarinen’s design genius, and spent an evening exploring every nook of this magnificent space. In its mid-century heyday, the TWA Flight Center was known as the "Grand Central of the Jet Age" for its status as the epicenter of the golden age of air travel, and we must say, the newly opened renovation (nearly $265MM) is outstanding.
ALL IN THE DETAILS | Designed by Finnish-born architect Eero Saarinen, his neo-futuristic structure mirrors the shape of a bird with its wings spread; timeless architecture indeed. And this place truly is where design exists in the finest of details - take for example this: half a century later and it’s still ticking - the iconic Vulcain clock, which visually anchors the expansive space (pictured below, top row, far right).
EMOTIF TIP | Make a point to explore all floors, inside and out - and don’t miss out on a nightcap aboard the 1958 TWA Plane, nostalgic and lovingly known as “Connie”. They’ve turned this classic aircraft into a bar, where you can end your visit on a “high” note.
